Dr. Erim Gómez is an Assistant Professor of Wildlife Biology at the University of Montana. He earned both his Master’s and Ph.D. in Natural Resource Sciences from Washington State University. His research focuses on the habitat ecology of charismatic minifauna, including crayfish, amphibians, butterflies, and birds. He served as the lead editor of Introduction to Wildlife Management and Conservation in North America (2022). Gómez is passionate about helping diversify the STEM and conservation professions, and loves nature documentaries because they helped inspire him to become a biologist.

A world-class wildlife photographer, James Ward grew up immersed in wildlife through the Zoo and Aquarium field and was introduced to Africa at age 15. Since then, he’s traveled extensively across Africa, Asia, and Central and South America, bringing a unique perspective to crafting customized safaris. James has worked closely with many conservation groups and social enterprises, creating economic opportunities for remote communities and contributing to wildlife conservation. He’s particularly proud of initiatives like jewelry made from reclaimed snare wire and honey that helps protect elephants. One of his most memorable experiences was assisting Painted Dog Conservation in Zimbabwe, where he helped collar painted dogs in Hwange National Park.

Carolyn Whittaker is an ecologist, science communicator, and film producer committed to telling engaging stories that drive social change and conservation. She has spent the last five years developing impactful documentaries that translate complex scientific issues into compelling narratives that connect with diverse audiences. Carolyn was an associate producer for Carbon: The Unauthorized Biography (2022) and the producer of the feature True Survivors (2023). Carolyn recently produced Animal Pride, which explores themes of diversity in nature and LGBTQ+ representation in science, and it received accolades at numerous film festivals, including Best Animal Behavior at IWFF last year.

Join us on Tuesday, January 20th, for two screenin Join us on Tuesday, January 20th, for two screenings of the Missoula-made wildlife documentary, 'THE LITTLE THINGS THAT RUN THE WORLD'!

This film introduces viewers to a diverse group of scientists, nature lovers, gardeners, farmers, and general bug-enthusiasts. It explores the importance of flying insects amid rapid declines in their numbers. What is causing this extinction crisis? What can be done to reverse the trend? 'THE LITTLE THINGS THAT RUN THE WORLD' attempts to find answers to those questions and more.

The film will be screening twice on 1/20, at 5:00 and 7:30. Both screenings will be followed by Q&A sessions with director Doug Hawes-Davis and other filmmakers!

This screening is sponsored by @advancedimagingofmt

The IWFF team will also be joined by friends from the Missoula Butterfly House & Insectarium and Grow Safe Missoula!
